Training and Familiarisation

CPD Accreditation

ABC Anchors is an approved Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training provider.

We offer training on both the theory behind the ABC Anchors screw piling system as well as practical installation of screw piles using Autoguide installation equipment.

Being CPD accredited ensures that the training offered by ABC Anchors meets strict standards and quality benchmarks, whilst also demonstrating our continued commitment to education within the construction industry. Our training courses will give you introductory knowledge, skills and practical experience necessary to enable you to take on your first ABC Anchors screw piles installation safely and competently.

Training Programmes

We currently offer two CPD accredited training courses at our office and workshop in Heddington, Wiltshire:

Course A: Two day familiarisation course

Day one covers the theory of screw piling; an overview of ABC Anchors screw piles and Autoguide installation equipment along with practical installation training.
Day two is held on site at your first screw piling project, where one of our Engineers will monitor your first installation and provide supervision, advice, guidance, hints and tips to your workforce. Please note we can only attend sites within 100 miles of Heddington.

Course B: One day familiarisation course

Includes Day One of the two day familiarisation course as above.
Intended for course attendees whose first screw piling project is further than 100 miles from Heddington.

CPD Accredited Training

We are delighted to announce that ABC Anchors is now an approved Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training provider.

Being CPD accredited ensures that the training offered by ABC Anchors meets strict standards and quality benchmarks, whilst also demonstrating our continued commitment to education within the construction industry. Attending any of our training courses counts towards achieving your annual professional CPD quota as a Fellow, Associate, Chartered, Incorporated, Graduate or Technician member with all of the relevant professional institutions.

AB Chance PISA System

PISA Stay Rod Installation

Once Alexander Mitchell had invented the helical screw pile, the development of high torque installation equipment and research by AB Chance ensured a growing confidence in the system. ABC Anchors was originally established to distribute AB Chance screw pile products for the utility industries and we continue to do so today.

The AB Chance power installed screw anchor (PISA) system is installed using the auger drive on Pole Erection Units (PEU) the length and breadth of the United Kingdom. Torque monitoring equipment allows operators to verify that minimum design capacities are achieved with a range of helix configurations to cover a range of soils from very hard to extremely soft. PEU operators have the great advantage of seeing the soil profile as they drill holes using the auger and can then select the optimum helix to hold the load.

Research by AB Chance established the torque to capacity equation – Qu = Kt x T where Qu = uplift (or compression) capacity in kN, Kt = torque factor m-1 and T = torque in kNm. This equation has been proven to be a very reliable predictor of pile/anchor capacity, especially for piles with a shaft diameter less than 150mm. A simple test can establish a site specific value for Kt, generally starting at 30 for small diameter piles and reducing as the shaft gets bigger

AB Chance has pioneered the use of screw piles both for tension and compression loads, as well as for use with utility poles and pylons. Pylons are often installed in poor soils or even waterlogged ground only accessible once it is frozen. Whilst it is tricky to use concrete in freezing conditions, screw piles work really well and can accept load immediately. In these applications weight saving and consequent reduction in plant mobilisation costs will make projects viable where no alternative exists.

About Us

ABC Anchors was established in 1999 by sister company Autoguide Equipment Ltd. A deal was struck with AB Chance via Hubbell in the USA to launch PISA Anchors in the UK, supplying Utility Boards with stay anchors for electricity poles. Also to manufacture Screw Piles under licence in the UK.

ABC Anchors continues to expand into the contract and domestic market, with screw anchors becoming the 21st century alternative for foundation work.

ABC Anchors developed the hand-held Anchor Installer which is a very popular machine in our hire fleet being used on underpinning, and jobs with limited access.

HOW CAN ABC ANCHORS HELP YOU?

Offering the complete Screw Pile solution, from design through to installation

The ABC Anchors Screw Pile range can be used for various applications, including bridges, wind turbines, solar panels, new builds, extensions, underpinning/foundation repair, canal/river bank restoration, flag poles and signs.

Screw Piles and Installation Equipment

ABC Anchors offers a range of screw piles and installation equipment.

Offering the complete solution from Design through to Installation

Why Choose Us?

Success in pile installation depends on selection of the correct piles, plus use of the extensive range of torque heads available from our sister company Autoguide Equipment. In many situations the higher initial cost of a screw pile is more than offset by much faster installation, no concrete (or very little) and no spoil disposal.

To fully utilise the time savings it is essential that the installation equipment is easy to use, fast in operation, reliable and (when used correctly) safe. Autoguide’s experience in developing new methods of torque head mounting gives pile installers the best possible solutions.

Advantages of Screw Piles

Tension and Compression

Screw Piles can accept our published design loads in either tension or compression.

Heave Resistant

The maximum diameter of pile shafts in our range is 89mm, which provides excellent resistance to the effects of expansive soil heave.

Any Angle

Screw Piles can be driven in at any angle to suit your designs.

Tree/Root Protection Areas

Screw Piles are repeatedly specified as the foundation of choice for building in tree protection areas.

100 Year Design Life

All ABC Anchors Screw Piles are galvanised or fitted with cathodic protection and come with our 100 year design life guarantee.

Low Noise/Vibration

The installation process uses a torque motor to smoothly drive piles into the ground and requires no hammering or vibratory action to do so.

Get Connected/Build Instantly

Piles can accept full loads immediately after installation. We supply a wide range of terminations to suit tension, compression and combination loads.

No Muckaway

Screw Piling requires no excavation prior to or during installation, and therefore requires no waste disposal.

Guarantee

The pile is guaranteed by ABC Anchors for the manufacture and design strength. This is in conjunction with the installer or piling contractor's pile log, recording actual installation torque at each pile position.

The pile loadings are presented by the structural engineers to ABC Anchors for installation recommendation. Using the information from the full ground investigation works, the pile design can be deduced with installation criteria which must be met to ensure the pile can resist the required safe working load.
